About

How Thuja began

Two ordinary people wanting to make a change.  The rest is history.

Just kidding there’s a little more.

We had many, many conversations around sustainability, the world, and life. As you do.

But as we spoke the question came up, how would you change someones habits for the better?

The answer we came up with was - “You make it incredibly easy, and provide some sort of savings.” Because, life is expensive, and we’re busy.

But more than that, we spoke about how in our community, nestled in remote British Columbia, Canada, we enjoy and experience nature, but we don’t necessarily protect it in our daily lives.

Most of us don’t know the environmental impact of that new Gore-Tex ski jacket that we buy; we don’t think a lot about the employment practices- was that jacket created in terrible conditions halfway across the world? Is it packaged around unnecessary plastic? Does the company give back to nature or try to reduce its carbon emissions?

We wanted to create something that allowed individuals like us to be able to see through the greenwashing façade. To create a business model that tackles the fast fashion industry, reduces our impact on the climate, has a positive impact on nature, and promotes fair and ethical work conditions.

Why we're different

Thuja is based on ecology and science, we aren’t cashing in on the current marketing taglines offering guilt-free solutions like carbon offsetting and treeplanting.

We always prioritize the environment and climate before business and are a social enterprise to our core. We only work with companies who share the same values, and a portion of every dollar we earn goes directly to nature and endangered species conservation projects. We’re here to make drastic changes.

Our mission

To create a global platform highlighting sustainable companies, while rewarding consumers for supporting them. Thuja’s mission is to do our part in creating a livable future by addressing climate change. To do that, we need to change our shopping habits. We need to shop less and buy better products that last.

We aim to have a positive effect on the environment, and to directly give back to nature conservation projects. We want to empower the everyday shopper to feel like they can make a difference, and to redirect spending towards companies that share the same values.

We don’t work with just anyone. At Thuja, we hold integrity and transparency as two of our most important values. All of the brands we work with are evaluated on an individual basis. Our main pillars of evaluation are product, climate and ecology, social justice, and 3rd party verifications to ensure what the brand is saying is true. We believe education is key to what we do, and aim to create a community that is empowered and feels confident in where their money is going.

Growing up I was lucky enough to see a lot of adventure for someone so young. Whether it was travelling with my family to the middle east, skiing most weekends, or hiking camping or fishing during the summer.

My parents always fostered my love of sports and being active. Not surprising to anyone who knew me, I sought out a mountain lifestyle after graduating high school, where I dabbled in new adventures like mountain biking, climbing, and backcountry skiing.

But adventure has never been enough for me. I’ve always wanted to make a difference for the better, and to live a life of purpose. Incorporating my education in business and accounting with my love of the environment was the perfect answer, and where Thuja started.

I was that kid, you know, the daydreamer, looking at the clouds passing on the window or the birds in the playground. I was dreaming about saving the whales. To be the new David Attenborough. That’s how I ended up in university later, graduating in ecology and biodiversity conservation, hoping to help protect endangered species.

When I’m not busy roaming the bush in Canada looking for mushrooms, I’m constantly bugging my friends and family about climate change, organic and local food, or unsolicited animal facts.

On top of Thuja, I am currently working on a documentary highlighting modern farming practices that help support the environment and ecological diversity. You can check it out to learn more on Instagram @projet_maculinea.
